The Subira, as it has always been known here, is a typical local variety that is mainly found in the Vorarlberg lowlands, i.e. from Dornbirn to the northern border. It has its original home here, although cultivation has recently been attempted in other federal states. Only Vorarlberg distillers are permitted to produce and market the brandy and the name SUBIRER is protected as a brand name.
The Subirer tree, formerly cultivated as a high trunk form, grows up to higher regions (in our area up to the Pfänder, Bregenz’s local mountain, 1000 m) and is resistant to all known diseases. It is not very demanding in terms of location and cultivation, but its aroma is optimal in sunny and higher locations
What the Subirer variety means to a Vorarlberg distiller, and to me in particular, can hardly be expressed in words. The greatest successes with Subirer have been achieved at national and international comparative tastings. The Subirer Harvest 1995 was rated the winning spirit in 1998 by the most important gourmet guides Gault-Millau and Heine a la Carte.
