Have you ever seen a field of poppies in full bloom? The purple-white-red sea of flowers is a feast for the eyes. In the first three weeks of July, you can admire the poppy blossom in the fields. Our gray poppy can “see” and is therefore also known as the “seeing poppy”. When the poppy is ripe, the eyes open under the poppy crown, where the ripe poppy can be shaken out. We enjoy the fresh poppy seeds at the beginning of September.

In order for the oils and flavor of the Waldviertler Graumohn PDO to develop perfectly and be used for baking and cooking, our poppy seeds must be crushed. In earlier times, a poppy seed mortar or a poppy seed mill was used for this, which can still be found in many households today!

Our tip: Put the freshly crushed poppy seeds in the freezer so that you always have fresh poppy seeds for baking and cooking. Shelf life: 10 days in the fridge, approx. 6 months in the freezer

It belongs to the food group of nuts and seeds and is an important source of calcium and potassium and contains vitamin B and essential amino acids. Poppy seeds have a fat content of around 42%. High-quality poppy seed oil can be pressed from it. Poppy seed oil is rich in linoleic acid (60-70%), an essential fatty acid that the body cannot produce itself and must therefore be obtained from food.
